riomaggiore * a collective building

At Cinque Terre, in a narrow valley carved into the rocks of the Ligurian Coast, a community of fishermen and farmers have built over the centuries one collective habitat, just like a beehive tucked into the steep cliffs.

It is to me a symbol of incipient urbanity: every room or unitary space is particularly represented (see photos of ‘housing units’) by color, volume, relationship to the mountain slope, to vegetation, to the built fabric. They create a rhythm that brings to light the complexity of space: temporal and spatial location, relationality.
